Leisure staff in awards shortlist for helping people of all ages learn to swim

Xcite West Lothian Leisure has been shortlisted for a prestigious award for helping people of all ages learn to swim.

The organisation has been named as a finalist in the 2022 Scottish Swimming Awards.

The Scottish Swimming Awards acknowledge the outstanding achievements of individuals in aquatics, alongside those whose work within partner organisations providing essential support for the whole aquatic community.

The Scottish Water Learn to Swim provider of the Year Award recognises the effort and commitment of Leisure Trusts and aquatic providers in creating and

delivering high quality Learn to Swim programmes which help children and adults become confident,

competent and safer swimmers.

A judging panel considered submissions from all over Scotland, with the three 2022 finalists announced last week as West Lothian Leisure, East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, and Fife Sports and Leisure Trust. The 2022 winners will be announced at an award ceremony set to take place in

Edinburgh on Saturday, September 24.

Xcite have been delivering the National Learn to Swim Framework in partnership with Scottish Swimming and Scottish Water since 2017 and currently deliver the full learn to swim pathway from Adult & Baby, all the way through to Pre-Club and Adult lessons. Lessons are delivered at Xcite

venues in Armadale, Bathgate, Broxburn, Livingston, Linlithgow and Whitburn, with the programme due to expand with new lessons being launched at the Winchburgh Sport and Wellbeing Hub in the coming weeks.

Karen Wernham, head of operations said: “Our team have worked tirelessly since the pandemic to reshape our Academy (coaching) Memberships and develop our learn to swim programme to maximise use of space and increase the opportunity for even more children and adults to learn to swim.

“As a result, we have increased the number of spaces available per week by 1300 with 90 per cent of these spaces being taken up by children having a great time learning an important life skill. To be shortlisted for swim provider of the year by our partners at Scottish Swimming is a real accolade for the team.”
