Leigh Wood responds to Josh Warrington's message ahead of Kiko Martinez rematch

Should Josh Warrington be able to claim back his IBF Featherweight title this weekend then a fight against Leigh Wood could take place at the City Ground in Nottingham. Warrington faces Kiko Martinez this weekend after vacating the IBF belt 14 months ago and will bid to regain his crown at the First Direct Arena in Leeds this weekend.

Should the 31-year-old prove successful in his bid to retake the title, a bout with Nottingham's Wood could be on the cards and Warrington has opened the door to a fight at the historic City Ground. Warrington opened the door to the fight, saying: "Listen, I’d love to go and boot the doors down at the City Ground and take the balmy Leeds lot with us and beat [Wood] in his backyard. But let’s concentrate on Saturday night and we’ll go from there."

Wood dramatically knocked down Michael Conlan earlier this month - losing only once since 2014 - and has slammed Warrington's confidence ahead of any potential bout.

The 33-year-old took to social media to send a message to Warrington, he said: "Everyone thinks they come and take over Nottingham. If it’s not Ireland, it’s Leeds. NO F****N WAY." Wood has never graced the City Ground pitch, home of Nottingham Forest but with his reputation rising, the WBA (Regular) featherweight champion might be able to achieve a dream this summer, before the start of the new football season.

Recently his promoter Eddie Hearn raised the prospect of a big fight for Wood in the near future: "The atmosphere is going to be unbelievable," Hearn said.

"Leigh is on the brink of becoming a big, big name in the sport, and this could probably open doors to a big fight at the City Ground as well.”
