Leigh Wood vs Mauricio Lara scorecards released from thrilling world title fight

Leigh Wood was ahead on all three judges' scorecards before he was knocked out by Mauricio Lara in their world title fight.

Lara, 28, produced a stunning stoppage against Wood in Nottingham to win the Brit's featherweight title after falling behind in the fight. Both men exchanged left hooks in the seventh round but Lara's landed with more conviction and Wood was sent crashing to the canvas. Despite getting back to his feet and beating the count, the fight was waved off when Wood's trainer Ben Davison threw in the towel.

The scorecards for the fight have now been released as judges Howard Foster and Guillermo Perez Pineda both had Wood up by four rounds to two at the time of the stoppage. Judge Oliver Brien had Lara winning just one round before he landed the knockout blow, given the Mexican the second and all other rounds to Wood.

Lara is now unbeaten in 16 fights following the stunning comeback and he is open to giving Wood a rematch in his first title defence. The Mexican recognised that he was falling behind in the fight and his corner urged him to step on the gas, which is exactly what he did by producing the stunning knockout.

"My left hook is very strong and very hard, my opponents know that. It was just a question of time and time was running out so I needed to step on the gas and that's what I did. We were calm, we weren't in control at certain points of the fight, but we knew how to get back into our rhythm and thankfully we did that," Lara said.

"It comes from hard work and dedication, I came here with a suitcase of dreams so this win means a great deal. It's like I have been carrying a stone on my back, this win is Mexico and for my family. It was a really long training camp so whatever my manager or Eddie Hearn wants next, I will be ready.

Things got heated after the fight as Lara spat at bitter rival Josh Warrington, who was watching on closely from ringside. Lara walked in the direction of Warrington and looked to be stepping out of the ring, but then spat in the direction of 'The Leeds Warrior' and the pair had to be separated by security. Lara has also welcomed a third fight against Warrington after beating him and fighting to a draw in their rematch.
