The fabric that keeps getting a new name

A runway sends out diagonal-striped silk. A fast-fashion brand drops "wave-print" kurtas. A luxury label calls it "artisanal resist craft." The Rajasthani dyer in Jaipur who woke up at five in the morning to twist wet fabric into tight diagonals before the sun made the dye run, she doesn't get a credit line. The technique is Leheriya. It has been Leheriya for centuries. The word comes from leher, the Hindi for wave, and the fabric earns the name: parallel diagonal stripes that move across a sari or dupatta like wind across still water.
