It’s the NFL offseason, which means the GOAT debates are going strong. While most people usually focus on best quarterbacks ever, former tight end Shannon Sharpe gave his opinion on the best tight end of all time.
The NFL analyst went on the New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce, and he explained why he believes Travis is the greatest tight end of all time, especially after his playoff run this year.
“When it’s all said and done, I don’t know how you make an argument that Trav isn’t the greatest tight end,” he said.
According to Sharpe, Kelce always shows up when it matters in the playoffs, even though everyone on the field knows the Chiefs want to get him the ball.
“Who the hell you think Patrick is gonna throw the ball to? He gonna throw it to him,” he said. “They know that, 80,000 people know that, Patrick Mahomes knows that, he knows they’re throwing the ball, and the defense knows he’s gonna get the ball, and somehow he still finds a way to come down with the football.”
Kelce has played in 18 total playoff games, recording at least 78 receiving yards in nine straight and 10 of his last 12. He also has a six game playoff touchdown streak and has scored in 12 of his last 15 playoff games.
“You never come out of a playoff game when you watch Kansas City and you say ‘Man, Trav didn’t have it today,’” Sharpe said. “He give you that work every single game.”
At 33 years-old, Kelce has a chance to become the best tight end of all time statistically if he remains healthy. Last year he passed Sharpe for No. 4 all-time on the tight end receiving yards list with 10,344. He is 1,500 yards away from third place, 3,000 away from second place and under 4,000 away from Tony Gonzalez’s spot at the top of the list.
