Legally Blonde prequel announced by Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon has announced a Legally Blonde prequel series

The 48-year-old actress made the announcement at Amazon’s Upfront event in New York City on Tuesday morning.

She performed her iconic “bend and snap” as she announced the prequel will be coming to Prime Video next year. In the video, she was seen getting dressed and applying pink lipstick.

“Before she became the most famous Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Harvard Law, she was just a regular ‘90s high school girl. And all of you are going to get to know her,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

"And all of you are going to get to know her, next year on Prime Video. I'M SO EXCITED!".

Fans took to the comments to share their excitement.

"This MAJOR," one comment read.

Another asked if Witherspoon's real-life daughter, Ava, would be playing Elle.

"Omg a series!!!!!," one read.

The prequel will follow Witherspoon's character Elle Woods before the events of Legally Blonde.

Legally Blonde, starring Jennifer Coolidge and Luke Wilson, became a huge hit after its release in 2001. Reese Witherspoon went on to be nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture and for Best Actress. She won MTV Movie Awards for Best Comedic Performance, Best Line and Best Dressed.

The film tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl admitted to Harvard Law School in pursuit of her boyfriend Warner, who had broken up with her.

Its success prompted a sequel two years later, as well as a stage musical which opened in 2007.

It is based on Amanda Brown's 2001 novel of the same name, and the outline originated from Brown's real-life experiences as a blonde going to Stanford Law School while being obsessed with fashion and beauty, reading popular magazines, and clashing with her peers.

The new series will be produced by Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine company, which is now a part of Candle Media, and previously collaborated with Amazon on the viral show Daisy Jones And The Six.
