Leeds woman's desperate plea to help bring sick mum sleeping rough in Kenya back to the UK

A Leeds woman has vowed she "will not rest" until she raises enough money to bring her mum back to the UK after she was left homeless and in desperate need of food and medication.

Peris Newlove's mum, Rose, moved back to her native Kenya "with one suitcase and just enough money for her plane ticket" in 2019. She had hoped to live on her grandad's farm, but Peris claims Rose, 50, has been shunned by her own family because of her lack of cash.

Writing on her Instagram account, Peris, 24, explained that her mum had to have surgery after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer, meaning she now requires life-long medication. "This is a very difficult time for me as my mother Rose decided to go back to Kenya but she has found herself in a bad way," she said.

"She is homeless, has no food, no shelter and can only contact me through her phone when she is able to get help from strangers." Peris said she initially had enough money to send to her mum so that she could buy medication and food, but said her spare funds have now run out.

"Last time she ran out of her medication she was coughing up blood and ended up in a Nairobi hospital," she said. "I really don't have any money to help her so that is why I have created a Go Fund Me. I am embarrassed to put our story out there but she is in need of help and if I can't help her I'm unsure what will happen."

Peris said she and her sisters have been supporting her mum over the past three years by sending her money as it is difficult for Rose to work due to her cancer diagnosis, depression and paranoia. According to Peris, Rose, who has indefinite leave to live in the UK, is receiving no help from her family in Kenya "on the basis that she came from the UK with nothing."

Peris has now set up a Go Fund Me page in the hope of raising enough money to support her mum - and eventually bring her back to the UK. Writing on the page, Peris said: "I can confirm she is not safe (in Kenya). They chased her out of her own grandfather's farm because she has no riches to show for her life in England.

"Her life was not full of riches in the UK, but she always managed to make sure I had food on my plate. That I got up to go to school, that I got up to make it to sixth form. She even saved up the little money she had for me to take to university."

In an update on the page on Saturday (July 2) Peris said: "My mother has now bought medication and food and applied for a passport. Jesus works miracles."
