Leeds Warrior Josh Warrington pictured in hospital bed after jaw surgery

World champion boxer Josh Warrington has shared a photo of himself in his hospital bed after undergoing jaw surgery after his victory over Kiko Martinez.

Leeds Warrior Warrington, 31, won the world title for the second time with his seventh-round stoppage of Martinez at the First Direct Arena. Spaniard Martinez suffered cuts to the head and both eyes and was bleeding heavily when the referee stopped the bout.

But Warrington also suffered a broken jaw and was taken to hospital after the fight. And today Warrington shared a photo from his hospital bed saying the injury was never going to stop him winning and thanking the medical team.

In the post he said: "I had planned on eating a cheeseburger and bread & butter pudding on Sunday after the fight. Not happening for a few weeks now with me broken jaw.

"Only a jaw though, that wasn’t going to stop me winning last night! My operation was a success this morning and I’m overwhelmed with the support last night. You really are the best fans in the world.

"HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? Also like to thank the staff at LGI and Dr Dalghous of the Yorkshire Dental Suite for all their help and service. Fantastic in all stages of treatment last night and today, proper heroes!"

And fans were quick to respond. Phil Reddington wrote: "Speedy recovery buddy. That cheeseburger will taste awesome in a few weeks pal."

And Richard Lancaster said: "Congratulations on a great win last night. The Leeds family are all very proud of you. I hope you have a speedy recovery. MOT."

The win means that a potential unification bout with Leigh Wood could take place, with the City Ground touted as a potential venue with the Nottingham-born fighter currently holding the WBA (Regular) belt. However, Warrington will be focused on recovery after winning his first fight since October 2019.
