Wilfried Gnonto question arises after Fulham defeat
Former Leeds United defender Matt Kilgallon is baffled that Wilfried Gnonto is unable to make the bench for Leeds United. The Whites 'fast tracked' their move for the Italy international, but he's yet to feature for Jesse Marsch's first-team.
Defeat to Fulham at Elland Road saw Leeds drop into the relegation zone, with a handful of games between now and the winter break for the World Cup. Gnonto was left out of the matchday squad but featured for the Under-21s against Middlesbrough in Premier League 2 Division 2.
“He’s playing for Italy but can’t even get on the bench”, Kilgallon said on BBC Radio Leeds. “It’s like ‘eh, what’s he doing wrong?'”
Patrick Bamford backed to score goals when if he can avoid injuries
Patrick Bamford has been backed to score goals at Leeds United if he can avoid injury problems for the remainder of the season. The Whites were criticised for not bringing in an additional striker, with Wilfried Gnonto yet to feature for the first-team.
Rodrigo made a blistering start to the season but dislocated his shoulder while Bamford has had continual injury problems. During his first Premier League season with Leeds, Bamford scored 17 goals in 38 total appearances, but managed just two in nine appearances last year.
“He will never have a better opportunity to play and get that fitness back, who is going to come in for him?” McAvennie told Football Insider. “The problem is, when he scored goals and got big figures, but he isn’t doing that now.
“If he comes back to scoring and back to fitness, getting the goals back, you couldn’t spend enough money to find someone who could do that. He has proven that he can do it. He has been injured for so long.
"The more game time he gets, the better he will become. There is no doubt that his confidence is obviously low at the moment.”
