Leeds United transfer rumours as Whites dealt potential blow in Cody Gakpo pursuit

A round-up of the latest Leeds United transfer rumours on Sunday, 18 September.

PSV part company with John De Jong after Cody Gakpo transfer rumours

Leeds United have been dealt a potential blow in their pursuit of PSV winger Cody Gakpo after the club parted company with technical director John de Jong. There had been speculation connecting his departure with a reported plan to sell Gakpo in the summer, however the club has now released a statement addressing that departure.

“After a hectic last week of the summer transfer, I had an evaluation with the Board of Directors,” says Brands. “It has emerged that there has been a unanimous breach of confidence in the Board with regard to the functioning of John de Jong.

“The management has always remained a unit. Both during and after the transfer window, but for John personally it has been a reason to think about his future. After a few days of reflection, John indicated that an indispensable form of backup has been lost for him. We have closed the case with the utmost respect and sincerely wish John the very best.”

In his own statement, John De Jong said: "I have always put PSV’s sporting ambitions first in everything, with an eye to the financial health of the club. Every decision taken this summer had the support of the entire management. This staff and selection are able to make it a successful season. As a PSV man I have worked with the club nearly half of my life in different roles with the club. I will cherish the memories.”

Former Leeds United midfielder on the verge of Championship move

Football League World claim former Leeds United midfielder Fabian Delph could be closing in on a move to the Championship. The midfielder is a free agent having left Everton in the summer.

Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Sunderland and West Brom are among the clubs in the second tier looking at the 32-year-old according to the report. However, Scottish giants Rangers are also reportedly keen on the former Manchester City utility player.

Delph has struggled with injuries throughout his career and managed just 41 appearances in all competitions during his three year stay at Goodison Park.
