Leeds United transfer rumours as Tottenham eye Illan Meslier as Hugo Lloris replacement

Here are your Leeds United transfer rumours for Monday, September 25.

Spurs eye Meslier

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly identified Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier as a replacement for Hugo Lloris.

Lloris has been at Tottenham for over a decade but is out of contract in the summer of 2024. Speaking on his podcast, Phil Hay from The Athletic said: “It’s quite interesting of all the clubs that are looking at Meslier, I think it’s fair to say that he now has replaced Raphinha and Phillips as probably the highest value asset in the squad at Leeds.

“If clubs are bidding for everybody at Elland Road, he would command the highest fee. It’s quite interesting that Spurs are one of the clubs looking at him as Lloris is getting into his mid-30s now and he is out of contract in 2024. You would assume that Tottenham would now be looking at a succession plan for him.”

Lloris has made 425 appearances for Spurs and a further 139 caps for France. Marcelo Bielsa’s £5.85million purchase of Meslier from FC Lorient in the summer of 2020 has proven to be a masterstroke. The 22-year-old is just five appearances shy of a century of games for the Whites and is among the most promising goalkeepers in Europe.

Wigan in talks with Rose

Wigan Athletic are in talks to sign former England left-back Danny Rose, according to The Sun. Rose was a product of Leeds United’s academy but joined Tottenham in 2007 without playing a single senior game for the Whites.

Rose amassed 214 appearances for Spurs across all competitions and reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2019. He also had loan spells at Watford, Peterborough United, Bristol City, Sunderland and Newcastle United respectively during his 14-year stay in North London.

The 32-year-old has been capped 29 times for England but hasn’t featured for the Three Lions since 2019. He moved to Watford following his exit from Spurs in 2021 but made just nine appearances as the Hornets were condemned to relegation from the Premier League last term.

Both parties mutually agreed to terminate Rose’s contract earlier this month and Rose has also been in contact with Greek side AEK Athens. However, Rose wants to stay in England and personal terms are not expected to be an issue over a potential move to the Latics.

Bayern drop out of race for Leeds target

Bayern Munich are not interested in signing Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos, according to Kicker via The Chronicle. Ramos was linked with Leeds in August and has also been lined up with moves to a number of Premier League clubs, including Newcastle and Manchester United.

Ramos has a £105million release clause but has been valued in the region of £25million. The 22-year-old is a product of Benfica’s academy and scored eight times playing in the shadow of Darwin Nunez last season.

Nunez’s big money move to Liverpool has enabled Ramos to take centre stage. The forward has thrived in the spotlight – posting eight goals and seven assists in 12 matches across all competitions for The Eagles in 2022/23.
