Leeds United's transfer clause windfall set to boost Championship rebuild

Leeds United are reportedly set for a hefty transfer clause windfall this summer thanks to Manchester City's history-making treble win this season as the Whites look to begin what will likely be a busy transfer window following their relegation to the Championship.

Leeds have a number of issues to sort out in their squad this summer, whether that is gearing up for departures from key players attracting attention from top-flight sides, filling gaps that were exposed in last year's relegation campaign or looking to bring in players with Championship and promotion experience.

The club appointed Nick Hammond as an interim football advisor on Thursday as they look to get moving out of the state of limbo that this summer's ongoing ownership saga has left them in before 49ers Enterprises' takeover was agreed last Friday.

Relegation has meant that Leeds will be shopping in very different markets this summer as their revenue is set to plummet. They will be able to benefit from Premier League parachute payments and from any transfer fees brought in, but they also have another source of income coming their way, thanks to a deal they struck last summer.

Kalvin Phillips' £42million switch to Manchester City assisted last year's recruitment drive and according to The Sun on Sunday, City's Champions League win last weekend will now see Leeds land a seven-figure sum, one of many payments that the treble-winners will now have to dish out.

Everton and Tottenham will also be landing similar sums, thanks to the transfers of fellow Yorkshire duo John Stones and Kyle Walker, while Wolfsburg will also be in the money thanks to a clause in Kevin De Bruyne's 2015 move.

Throp Arch graduate Phillips ended the season with Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League winners' medals, despite struggling for game time at the Etihad Stadium this season. In the Premier League, he played 290 minutes, with 161 minutes played in the FA Cup and just 39 in Europe's leading competition, amid speculation that City could listen to offers for the England midfielder this summer.
