Leeds United's total money spent in January windows gone by since Andrea Radrizzani's takeover

Leeds United are hoping to make Brenden Aaronson their first January signing since promotion to the Premier League in 2020.

The Whites have not made much use of the winter market since Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at the club in 2018, with only three senior signings in almost four windows.

Due to the time it takes for players to get up to speed, Leeds have steered clear of utilising January too often, however sometimes it is needs must.

With that in mind, here is a look at how much Leeds have spent in each of Andrea Radrizzani’s four January windows as owner of the club, and how that could offer us an indication on what to expect in the final week.

2018 - £9.69 million (transfermarkt)

Leeds’ highest spending January under Radrizzani’s tenure came in his first as owner, with four first team signings and three academy additions.

With a combined total of over £7 million, Leeds biggest investments were Adam Forshaw and Tyler Roberts, both of whom are still at the club now.

Laurens De Bock and Yosuke Idugechi both also joined the Whites that month, however neither made any impact at Elland Road.

Aapo Halme, Jordan Stevens and Sam Dalby were the three academy additions, and while none are now at the club, the former two both went onto play five and six times respectively for the first team.

2019 - £90,000 (transfermarkt)

January 2019 was an extremely quiet window for Leeds, with Kiko Casilla the only addition to the first team.

Although transfermarkt has his move from Real Madrid down as a free transfer, the outlay on his wages mean that won’t have been a cheap deal.

Casilla enjoyed a mixed spell with Leeds, with some brilliant saves coupled with major errors eventually seeing him drop behind Illan Meslier in the pecking order.

Mateusz Bogusz also joined the club that month, and he is still on the books of Leeds, but is currently out on loan at UD Ibiza.

2020 – nothing (transfermarkt)

Leeds made two additions to their first team squad in January 2020, with Ian Poveda and Jean-Kevin Augustin both joining the club.

Poveda joined on a free transfer from Manchester City and was seen as Jack Clarke’s replacement, who saw his loan spell cut short by Tottenham Hotspur due to a lack of game time.

Augustin then made a loan switch to Leeds later in the window, and while transfermarkt has it down as nothing, it will have cost a substantial loan fee.

An obligation to buy of £20 million was also inserted into that deal, which could still to this day cost Leeds despite the loan being cut short due to his injury problems and the Covid break during the season.

2021 – nothing

Due to their £100 million summer outlay and excellent position in the Premier League table, Leeds conducted no business in January last season.
