Leeds United's hopes of dream transfer reunion dashed after Liverpool offer

Liverpool midfielder James Milner is set to sign a new one-year extension to remain at Anfield bringing to an end hopes of a potential reunion at Leeds United. Milner was born and raised in Leeds, and begun his career at Elland Road - making 48 league appearances before being forced to leave to join Newcastle United due to financial difficulties at the club.

This summer, Milner becomes a free agent after seven years at Liverpool, and had been linked to a return to the Whites, after previous reports suggested that he'd like to finish his career back at his hometown club.

However, any move to see him back in White looks set to be put on hold for at least another year, as the 36-year-old is ready to sign a new deal with Jurgen Klopp's side.

Milner featured in 39 games for the Reds last season and remains a key member of Klopp's side, being deployed at central midfield and right-back whilst being a reliable option off the bench.

He has claimed six major trophies during his time with Liverpool but has seen playing time gradually reduce over time, taking on a more sporadic yet important role within the team - a role he has reportedly agreed to take on next season, too, with the Liverpool Echo reporting that Milner is expected to ignore proposals from elsewhere to remain at the club, albeit on 'significantly reduced terms'.

Leeds had been one team who had been strongly linked with Milner, who has shown that he's still able to perform at a high level in a press-heavy midfield - a role which Marsch will look to improve on in his current squad.

Milner is understood to have turned down an offer of a two-year deal from two Premier League clubs and one MLS side, according to The Athletic, with confirmation of the new contract expected later this week.
