Leeds United's best and worst-case Premier League relegation battle scenarios this weekend

Leeds United are in the middle of a crucial run of Premier League games as they welcome Manchester United to Elland Road in the return fixture following their 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

Leeds and Man United shared the points on Wednesday night in the first of their back-to-back top-flight games this week. A stunning strike from Willy Gnonto inside the opening minute was followed by a Raphael Varane own goal early in the second-half to give the Whites a 2-0 lead over the Red Devils for the first time since 1974.

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho would hit back for Erik ten Hag's side, but co-caretaker manager Michael Skubala would have been mightily impressed with the level of performance he saw from his side.

Ahead of Sunday's crunch games, LeedsLive has a taken a look at the best and worst case scenarios for the Whites in the Premier League this weekend.

Best case

A win for Leeds would not only see the Whites get bragging rights over their rivals and record a top-flight victory for the first time since November, it would also ultimately move them further away from the relegation zone.

Bottom-placed Southampton take on Wolves this weekend and with Leeds being four points clear of Nathan Jones' side, they could do with the Saints holding Julen Lopetegui's team to a draw should they themselves claim victory over Man United. Those results would see the Whites moves up into 15th and even potentially 14th if Tottenham beat Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

West Ham are currently only behind Leeds on goals scored, meaning that Leeds will look to Chelsea to turn their poor form around and claim victory at the London Stadium during Saturday's early kick-off.

Everton and Bournemouth sit one and two points below Leeds respectively and both sides face tricky fixtures this weekend. A Merseyside derby victory for Liverpool would keep the Toffees at arm length, while Eddie Howe takes his Newcastle team to the Vitality Stadium where Whites fans will hope he can pile on the misery for his former side on the south coast.

Should the above pan out, Leeds would end up in 14th place.

Worst case

However, Leeds could end the weekend just one point above basement-dwelling Southampton should things not go their way.

A win for the Saints over Wolves would see their tally for the season reach 18 points, just one off Leeds' current total of 19. That would of course depend on Man United not only extending the club's winless streak, but going one further than they managed at Old Trafford and inflicting defeat at Elland Road.

With both Chelsea and Liverpool in dire straits this season, West Ham and Everton could cause an upset and leapfrog the Whites with wins over their respective opponents. And should the Cherries upset the odds by becoming only the second team to beat Newcastle this campaign, Leeds would be just one point ahead of Southampton and two points adrift from safety.

Premier League fixtures for Leeds fans to keep an eye out for this weekend:

Southampton vs Wolves - Saturday, 15:00
