Leeds United's apparent leadership void best explained by dressing-room ties

Side before self, every time. It’s the mantra every Leeds United player cannot miss. It’s plastered across the main building at Thorp Arch and stuck to the main window down the front of Elland Road.

No matter how long or little you have been pulling on that white shirt, you are left in no doubt what it means to play for Leeds and follow in the footsteps of greats like Billy Bremner. Javi Gracia feels this current team has the same respect and support for one another in putting the team first.

Who are the leaders on the field though? Which players are making their voices heard when backs are against the wall and Liverpool have gone 3-1 up?

Rodrigo wore the armband on Monday night, but a glance down the teamsheet does not throw up any obvious names banging the shield and taking team-mates by the scruff of the neck. Gracia does not necessarily feel a player needs to be vocal to be a leader on the field.

"There are different leaders, there are different ways to be a leader,” he said. “Some of them speaking more, some of them doing and learning from examples every day.

“Maybe we don't have players that show that character outside, but inside, I can tell you we have a good atmosphere. All of them respect each other, help each other, and I'm happy with the atmosphere we have."

The rapid speed of the collapses after conceding to Crystal Palace and Liverpool, following good spells for the Whites, is what brought the question about in Thursday’s press conference. The head coach accepted the merits of the question, but neatly wrapped up the way everyone is feeling by this point: less talking, more doing.

"I understand perfectly why you ask me,” he said. “I understand that. In this moment, it's not time to speak, it's time to do.

“We have to show what we are able to do. If you tell me all these things, I agree with you, but we only can do and this way we'll come back the way we were before."
