Ralf Rangnick reveals what Paul Tierney said about Bruno Fernandes foul in build up to Leeds equaliser
Ralf Rangnick claims referee Paul Tierney told him complaining about a foul on Bruno Fernandes in the build-up to Leeds' equaliser was 'why he had to come to England.'
The German head coach was remonstrating with the officials about a possible foul on the Manchester United midfielder, but the officials gave nothing.
Speaking to Manchester Evening News, Rangnick said: "We showed maturity. We were rising our level of aggression towards what we had to play here in this atmosphere.
"For me, as somebody coming from Germany, there were quite a few tackles that in Germany there would've been no discussion whatsoever.
"I spoke to the referee after the game about that tackle on Bruno before they scored the equaliser and I said, 'listen, in Germany, they wouldn't have even asked VAR' and the referee said to me, quite funnily, 'listen, this is probably why you had to come to England'.
"We did well, we showed character and this was important after the results of yesterday. We had to win the game and I hope that not only the win but the way we achieved the win will give us new additional energy for the upcoming games on Wednesday against Atletico Madrid and the next Premier League game against Watford at home."
'This will be his last season'
Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills believes this will be Marcelo Bielsa's last season at Elland Road.
Bielsa confirmed there had been no talks yet regarding his future, and Jesse Marsch is believed to be the Whites hierarchy's preferred replacement.
“I think it’s highly likely that this will be Marcelo Bielsa’s last season,” Mills told Football Insider.
“There’s more chatter than ever before. Clearly, Leeds are looking at, he likes to sign these one-year deals so there must be a plan in place if he doesn’t.
“They must be chatting to him, getting an indication of what he’s going to do. You’ve also obviously got potential new owners in the 49ers and I assume they will add some more investment once the Augustin case is settled.
“This year more than ever, yes, it’s highly likely that it could be Bielsa’s last year at Leeds.”
Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United hunch rings true as violent Manchester United swing exposed
Leeds United took more shots, created more chances, won more tackles and completed more passes than their arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, but found themselves on the losing side.
Marcelo Bielsa made a telling comment in his post-match press conference, which somewhat explained why Leeds were left with nothing to show for their efforts.
"They missed very few chances but they were very efficient," the 66-year-old said.
"And we were less efficient - and the difference comes through them. We had seven or eight chances to score a goal just like the opponent but they scored in a higher proportion and us not in the same proportion."
Ultimately, Leeds were undone by Manchester United's ruthlessness and efficiency in the final third - a similar story to their 5-1 defeat at Old Trafford last August.
Earlier this season, Man United scored five against Leeds from an Expected Goals total of 1.27, as per InfoGol.
Manchester United's arch-rival cheat sheet a cause for Leeds United concern as deja vu strikes
A hearty dose of déjà vu was in store for Leeds United on Sunday afternoon as another of the so-called 'Big Six' arrived at Elland Road and left with all three points.
As well-endowed teams have done so effectively this season, a particular tactic of Manchester United's exposed weaknesses in Marcelo Bielsa's man-marking structure.
The gallivanting forward runs of Victor Lindelof tore at the fabric of Leeds' man-to-man system, creating numerical advantages in dangerous areas.
His burst into midfield for Man United's second goal, coupled with Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to drop off, meant Diego Llorente vacated space at centre-half by following the Portuguese, allowing Bruno Fernandes to drift into the position from which he eventually scored.
Joel Matip did something very similar in Liverpool's 3-0 win at Elland Road earlier this season, to equally damaging effect.
