Leeds United news as Whites receive relegation escape boost amid 'huge' injury blow for rivals

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines on Tuesday, February 28.

Leeds United receive relegation escape boost amid 'huge' injury blow for rivals

West Ham manager David Moyes has confirmed his side have been dealt a 'huge blow' after goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski fractured his cheekbone and eye socket in their clash against Nottingham Forest last weekend.

The Polish international has started every Premier League game for the Hammers this season and will be seen as a huge missing piece in Moyes' squad as he recovers from the injury over the next few weeks.

With West Ham looking to escape relegation alongside Leeds, it could be a big boost for the Whites as without their regular goalkeeper, it's likely Alphonse Areola or Darren Randolph will have to step in and cause uncertainty amongst the Hammers ranks.

"[He’s] got a fractured cheekbone and an eye socket," Moyes admitted. "We don’t quite know whether it’ll be operated on or healing itself, or a time span at the moment.

"Huge [blow] for us and obviously huge for the goalkeeper as well. [Especially at] this stage of the career for him as well."

Paul Merson reveals off-air Leeds United relegation admission from fellow Sky Sports pundit

Paul Merson has claimed that fellow Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison told him that Leeds United will be relegated "five times" off-camera during their 1-0 win over Southampton at Elland Road.

Junior Firpo's first goal for the club sparked wild scenes of celebration in West Yorkshire as Javi Gracia got off to the perfect start in his tenure as Leeds manager. The result saw the Whites move up to 16th in the table, as Everton and Bournemouth both lost their respective matches to Aston Villa and Manchester City.

A midweek FA Cup clash with Fulham punctuates Leeds' Premier League battle against relegation, with a trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea next up for the Whites on Saturday afternoon.
