Leeds United news as Steven Gerrard claim made ahead of Sunday's Aston Villa clash

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Monday 26 September 2022.

Gerrard claim

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor believes “the pressure is off” Steven Gerrard after their victory against Southampton. Questions had been asked about the 42-year-old’s position as, before the result, Villa had won just twice in their last 11 Premier League games.

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor - a lifelong Villan - insisted Gerrard can relax slightly now the tension has been lifted. The ex-striker also highlighted how teams have previously won trophies despite not playing attractive football.

“Sometimes you’ve got to be honest,” Agbonlahor said. “He (Gerrard) said it wasn’t the best football but he got a result, that’s what it’s about at times. Managers will get sacked and players will be judged more on results. Some players aren’t at it at times and you get the result, the pressure is now off.”

Adams

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams has emphasised the importance of heading into the World Cup in winning form. The United States lost 2-0 against Japan in Dusseldorf on Friday and have an opportunity to make amends when they face Saudi Arabia on Tuesday in Spain.

Adams has revealed that USA boss Gregg Berhalter has intended to use the two games during the final international break before the World Cup to replicate the type of scenarios they will face at the finals.

However, the 23-year-old has called for more discipline and intensity to avoid a repeat of the Star and Stripes' sloppy performance against Japan. "We need to take a step back, a little bit of a refresher. Look at the video, go over the things that you need to," Adams told the media via TJ Sports USA.

Neville

Leeds United's start to the new Premier League campaign looks as though it will prove Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville's pre-season prediction wrong.

While the Whites have drawn one and lost two domestic games since their rampant 3-0 win over Chelsea at the end of August, Leeds have been competitive in the majority of their games this season.

Their last outing did see them fall 5-2 to an Ivan Toney inspired Brentford but bar their drubbing in West London, Jesse Marsch's side look to be night and day ahead of the team that almost got relegated last term.

Prior to the start of the season, Neville said speaking on The Overlap : "I would agree with the bottom three you just said there [Forest, Bournemouth and Fulham]. But, I do think those two above, Brentford and Leeds are the two that could sink into it."
