Leeds United news as Sam Allardyce reveals 'honour' and message for Whites' future

Here are the latest Leeds United headlines for Friday, June 2, 2023.

Allardyce's Leeds 'honour'

Sam Allardyce has spoken of his 'honour' in managing Leeds United after the club confirmed his spell as the club's head coach has come to an end. The two parties mutually agreed that the former England boss has left the club.

Allardyce took charge of the Whites' final four games of the season but was unable to steer the club to safety, with their relegation to the Championship being confirmed on Sunday.

Leeds picked up just one point from a possible 12 available to them and following talks with Angus Kinnear, Allardyce will not be continuing in the role.

“It has been an honour to manage Leeds United, a great club with an incredible fan base, who deserve to be in the Premier League," Allardyce said. "I have really enjoyed working with the staff and players at the club and I would like to thank Angus Kinnear for the opportunity. I’d also like to highlight the outstanding work of Karl Robinson and Robbie Keane who have worked tirelessly cover the past few weeks.

"At this stage in my career I am not sure taking on this challenge, which is potentially a long-term project, is something I could commit to, but I wish the club every success for the future and hope the club returns to the Premier League, where they belong."

Next manager odds

Former Rangers and Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is the early 5/2 favourite for the vacant managerial position at Leeds United, according to Bet 365. The Liverpool legend has been out of work since leaving Villa Park in October 2022.

Marcelo Bielsa's former assistant, Carlos Corberan is the second favourite at 10/3 having guided Huddersfield Town to the play-offs back in 2021/22. Former Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers is the current 5/1 outsider to take over at Elland Road.

The club say an announcement on the club's next head coach will be made 'in the coming weeks'. This comes amid the uncertainty over the future of the club's ownership, with Andrea Radrizzani currently remaining the majority shareholder, despite his move for Italian side Sampdoria and his ongoing discussions with 49ers Enterprises over a takeover at Leeds United.
