Leeds United news as relegation rivals 'close in' on bumper takeover deal

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Thursday, May 18.

Everton takeover could happen 'next week'

Everton are currently embroiled in a tight relegation scrap with Leeds United, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest as the quartet look to avoid joining Southampton in dropping down to the Championship and subsequent financial impact that would follow.

The Toffees' current financial position means that they appear to have more at stake than their current rivals, as FFP charges hang over them, while their new stadium needs more funding to be completed.

But according to the Mail, the club could be sold as soon as next week for £600million to American investment fund 777 Partners. The report adds that while Everton want the deal done quickly, the buyers are demanding a Premier League guarantee in order to finalise the deal.

Leeds also have a pending takeover hanging over them, with the 49ers Enterprises poised to complete their full acquisition of the club, but again, this is dependent on Premier League survival.

Archie Gray's chance to follow in Lewis Cook's footsteps

Leeds United youngster Archie Gray will be gunning for European glory over the next couple of weeks. Gray has been included in England’s squad for the 2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, which is being held in Hungary through the rest of May and early June.

The tournament got underway yesterday and the Three Lions will get their campaign started this evening as they take on Croatia in Balmazujvaros. England have been drawn into Group D, with Switzerland and the Netherlands making up the group and they’ll be focused on claiming one of the two qualification spots for the knockout stages.

Gray is fresh from playing 90 minutes for Leeds’ Under-21s on Monday night as the Whites sealed promotion at Elland Road with a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest. As such, given the quick turnaround, it remains to be seen whether he will be involved tonight.

Chris Sutton 'baffled' by Leeds United oversight made by Sam Allardyce

Chris Sutton believes Leeds United's Premier League fate has already been sealed - and has highlighted one oversight by manager Sam Allardyce.

The Whites are winless in their last seven games in the competition and have just two matches remaining to escape the bottom three.

Their most recent outing saw them held to a 2-2 draw at home to Newcastle United. Leeds had a golden chance to open up a two-goal buffer but spurned that opportunity when Patrick Bamford missed a penalty. Allardyce later spoke of how he had not assigned a penalty-taker - something Sutton is struggling to understand.
