Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Wednesday, 5 October 2022.
Scholes verdict
Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes believes Leeds United must keep Patrick Bamford fit to have a chance of staying up. Bamford has been eased back into the side this season after missing almost the entirety of last term.
Scholes was speaking on Premier League productions after Leeds’ 0-0 draw with Aston Villa, and admitted he is unsure if Jesse Marsch’s side have enough to beat the drop. He said: “The atmosphere is brilliant at Leeds. Once you get them fans going, it’s a really tough place to go.
“Has he got the team this year to survive? I don’t know. On the evidence against Aston Villa, they didn’t look great, they didn’t look like they had much of a threat up front.

“Obviously, getting Bamford fit will be a big bonus for them. But the lad just can’t seem to stay fit for long. If he stays fit, then they have a chance because he scores goals, but they were lucky against Aston Villa and it was only Villa’s bad finishing that got them the point.”
Appleton
Blackpool manager Michael Appleton was on Leeds United's radar to become Jesse Marsch's assistant manager at Elland Road before taking the job at Bloomfield Road.
The 46-year-old departed his former club Lincoln City at the end of last season, leaving them in League One where they're currently struggling in 15th.
Appleton is now in his second stint with the Seasiders, after managing them back in 2012 where he resigned after just 11 games but nearly arrived at Elland Road according to The Athletic.

World Cup break
Managerless Wolverhampton Wanderers will dictate how Leeds United approach the World Cup break from next month. Jesse Marsch has set out a rough idea for how the Whites will negotiate the second, extended break of the campaign through November and December.
The broadcasters’ choices are in and Tottenham Hotspur away at 3pm on November 12 has been confirmed as the last game United will play before their squad disbands. However, it’s the clash three days earlier which will dictate the medium-term plan.
Leeds visit Molineux for a 7.45pm kick-off in the Carabao Cup on November 9 and victory would put them into round four. EFL has decided that round will play in the week commencing December 19, two days after the World Cup final and six days before the Boxing Day Premier League return with Manchester City.
