Leeds United news as Mick McCarthy outlines his reason for dropping Whites loanee Ian Poveda

Mick McCarthy explains Ian Poveda absence

Blackpool boss Mick McCarthy has explained that Leeds United loanee Ian Poveda was left out of his side's game against Burnley over the weekend as "that game wasn't for him".

The Seasiders held the league leaders to a 0-0 draw without Poveda - who has been a regular for Blackpool this season - as the 23-year-old failed to even make the bench.

Speaking after the game, McCarthy revealed that an injury concern prevented him from naming the Leeds loanee in his side, but he may not have even done so if he was fit due to concerns over his level of tactical discipline.

“Ian had a bit of a knock in his back early on," he told the Blackpool Gazette. "I think he went for a scan on Friday and he was still feeling it. He told me after I left him out that he was okay. Well, that’s unlucky because I left him out.

"That game wasn’t for him, though, in terms of him being that loose player, he’s not that disciplined in a 4-4-2 where he’d have to drop in and stop Burnley playing, so that was an easy decision for me."

A 10 per cent price rise will hit Leeds United season tickets next year with that hike refunded if the club is relegated to the Championship. The Whites have stressed this is only the second rise in 12 years, but it was not a decision taken lightly.

Season ticket holders will have from 3pm on March 6 until April 7 to renew their pass before it is offered to the 21,850 supporters on the club’s waiting list. The 22/23 price was the second cheapest in the Premier League, according to United, and next year’s fee will start the average match adult price from £22.21, with under-16s at £7.63 and under-11s £4.42 per game.

A club statement said: “We appreciate any increase in the current economic climate is unwelcome, particularly when it coincides with poor performance on the pitch.
