Leeds United news as Mateusz Klich scores MLS debut goal and Junior Firpo hails 'amazing' Whites

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines on Sunday, February 26.

Mateusz Klich scores stunner on MLS debut

The former Leeds United man departed Elland Road in January to join MLS side DC United. Since arriving at the club in 2017 - the first signing under Victor Orta - Klich soon became a fan favourite.

His move to the United States was a hard pill to swallow for many supporters as they waved goodbye to a man with many fond memories of his time in West Yorkshire. However, they will no doubt now be delighted to hear that Klich has taken no time at all to settle in to his new club after he scored a sensational strike during his debut for DC United.

The 32-year-old took aim from 25 yards out against Toronto and fired a stinging drive into the far corner in the 13th minute. Toronto hit back with two goals of their own, but two stoppage-time strikes - including one from Christian Benteke - sealed all three points in DC United's curtain-raiser for the new season.

After the game, head coach Wayne Rooney said that he was "delighted" for Klich and that the former Leeds star had been "excellent" in pre-season.

Junior Firpo hails Whites performance after scoring winning goal vs Southampton

Leeds United star Junior Firpo has insisted that the Whites "were the better team" after they beat Southampton 1-0 at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

Leeds recorded their first Premier League victory since a 4-3 win over Bournemouth back in November as they ran out 1-0 winners over the Saints. Firpo's first goal for the club sealed all three points for Javi Gracia's side in front of a thunderous Elland Road atmosphere.

It took until the 77th minute for Firpo to break the deadlock. The full-back slotted his low effort under Gavin Bazunu, ensuring Gracia got off to the perfect start. After the full-time whistle blew, the defender spoke to the media as he insisted that despite the scoreline being so close, Leeds thoroughly deserved to win the match.

Firpo pandemonium

Much like Pablo Hernandez’s winner at Swansea City or Joe Gelhardt’s killer at home to Norwich City last season, you can always measure the magnitude of a Leeds United goal by the number of people deserting the bench. Gaetano Berardi looked like he was hunting for prey as he skipped the Liberty Stadium hoardings in search of Pablo, Stuart Dallas was sending word to Cookstown with the speed and ferocity of punches to the turf when Gelhardt wheeled away.

Junior Firpo’s goal was monumental for the whole of the club, not just him, a left-back who has had a tough time of it since arriving from Barcelona. Marc Roca flooded onto the field to directly catch his compatriot.

Wilfried Gnonto, lagging behind a dozen of his teammates, would trot down the touchline from the bench himself, grinning from ear to ear. The Italian got a yellow card for his trouble too.
