Leeds United news as Jurgen Klopp fears Whites 'fight' as injured star teases comeback

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Tuesday, 15 February.

Klopp’s Leeds admission

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is expecting a tough game when his side host Leeds United next Wednesday.

The fixture, that was originally scheduled for Boxing Day, is both teams’ game in hand on everyone around them.

The Reds will be looking to close the gap to league leaders Manchester City to six points, while Leeds can open up some breathing space between them and the bottom three.

Klopp knows that Leeds will not prove to be an easy game as they continue their fight for survival.

Via the BBC, he said: “It’s nine points, then it’s 12 points because most of the time they have played before us.

“If we were to look at that then we would think ‘they are out of reach’. Then we win and there is a game in hand.

“But that’s Leeds at home. They fight for survival as well. It’s not that we want that game already.

“So, these things are really, really difficult. That’s why we don’t think really about it.”

Merseyside police statement

Merseyside Police have insisted their actions against Leeds United supporters at Goodison Park last weekend were 'proportionate and necessary' after videos emerged online of fans being pepper-sprayed.

Members of Leeds United's away allocation were pictured covering their faces, visibly affected by pepper spray discharged by Merseyside Police in an attempt to detain an individual accused of assaulting a steward inside the ground.

The Police have since stated, as per the BBC : "At around 4.05pm at the start of the second half, it was reported a steward had been headbutted by a man in the away section on the Lower Bullens stand.

"Officers attended and while attempting to detain the male, other members of the crowd began to throw bottles at officers and two officers were punched to the face.

"One man, aged 44, from Skipton, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and assaulting an officer. He was taken into custody to be interviewed and has been released under investigation.

"When police were assaulted, officers deployed PAVA [pepper] spray in order to bring the situation under control for the safety of fans near to the disturbance."

Greenwood teases comeback

Leeds United striker Sam Greenwood has hinted he has stepped up his recovery from injury on a recent Instagram story.

Greenwood was forced to undergo knee surgery last month after he lasted just 45 minutes on his full debut for the club in the FA Cup match at West Ham United.

Over the past week, Greenwood has twice shared images of his football boots, indicating he is back on the grass following his procedure.

While it is unlikely he will return to be a prominent first-team player before the end of the season, it will provide a considerable boost to the U23 side, who Greenwood routinely captains in Cresswell's absence.
