Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Monday, 17 October 2022.
Marsch's message
Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch has backed his side to come out stronger after their recent struggles but admits it can be difficult to remain 'patient'. The Whites' winless run was extended to six matches on Sunday as they were narrowly beaten by table-topping Arsenal at Elland Road.
Leeds will have been frustrated to come away from the game empty-handed after missing a string of chances, with Patrick Bamford squandering the best of them from the penalty spot. Marsch, though, is adamant his side are improving and is confident of a return to winning ways soon.
He wrote on Twitter: "It’s difficult to be patient as a manager, I want to win every game. I ask the lads to invest everything they have into our process & each other. My experience is that they will benefit massively from this mentality. We’re getting better, no doubt, & I back these men all the way!"
Ref watch
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes the officials got all three big decisions correct in Leeds United’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. The Whites were narrowly beaten by the Premier League leader’s courtesy of Bukayo Saka’s first half goal but the game was not short of controversy.
After his half time introduction from the bench, Patrick Bamford was at the heart of most of the game’s big talking points. First, he saw his goal chalked off by referee Chris Kavanagh just moments after the break following a push on Gabriel, which Gallagher thinks was the right call.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ ref watch, he said: “I thought it was a foul, when you see it, it is hard to say it is not a foul. The interesting thing is he [Bamford] has pointed to his chest there, to say it’s not handball I think he said to the referee. You see there he quite clearly pushes him, without VAR that would not have been given.”

National media verdict
Leeds United fell to another defeat on Sunday afternoon as Jesse Marsch's side lost 1-0 to Premier League leaders Arsenal at Elland Road. The Whites put on a battling display but were unable to find a way back into the contest after Bukayo Saka's first-half strike. They did win a penalty which could have changed the game, but striker Patrick Bamford fired his spot kick wide.
The result means Leeds have now not won a game since August 21 when they beat Chelsea 3-0. While performances of late have not been disastrous, they are quickly finding themselves in need of getting points on the board.
