Leeds United news as Jesse Marsch offers Dan James departure insight and Cody Gakpo pursuit

A round-up of your Leeds United morning headlines on Monday, September 5.

'We needed to move something' - Jesse Marsch opens up on Daniel James' Leeds United departure

Jesse Marsch has claimed Leeds United had to move someone on in order to bring in a new striker on deadline day. The Whites agreed to send Daniel James on a season-long-loan move to Fulham, despite the Welshman having been involved in all of the last four matches.

Leeds endured an extremely chaotic deadline day in their pursuit of a striker, first being frustrated by PSV for Cody Gakpo, before Bamba Dieng opted against a move to Elland Road even though a fee had been agreed with Marseille. Wilfried Gnonto was instead the man Leeds brought in, with his arrival confirmed around 25 minutes after James’ departure to Fulham.

Despite Leeds already having sold both Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips earlier in the window for just shy of £100 million, Marsch insisted that someone had to leave in order to press ahead with their search for a new striker.

Leeds United loan watch as Charlie Cresswell and Ian Poveda impress

From Saudi Arabia to League One, seven of Leeds United’s loanees were in action over the weekend. Overall it was a decent weekend for the on loan contingent, with four players earning victories, one securing a draw and two suffering defeats.

While the Whites fell to a 5-2 defeat at Brentford, here is how they all got on.

Daniel James

James made his first appearance for Fulham following his deadline day switch. The Welshman came on for the final half an hour but could not prevent a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

PSV director opens up on Whites' summer Cody Gakpo pursuit

PSV club director John De Jong has confirmed Leeds United failed to make a good enough concrete offer for Cody Gakpo. Leeds were in strongly for the Dutchman on deadline day and Victor Orta even flew in to Netherlands to discuss a potential transfer.

De Jong admitted Orta did speak to Gakpo, but given the time of the transfer window, the offer was not enough. “Leeds TD (Orta) flew in and talked to Cody,” he said, as quoted by Voetbal.

“We received and listened to Leeds, but in the end, no concrete offer was put on the table where we thought we should sell it now. I think everyone knows that a club has to make an outgoing transfer every year.

“That’s in the budget. So did we, but in the end, there was not such a good offer on the table that we really considered letting him go.”
