Leeds United news as Jesse Marsch again criticised for 'rich' time-wasting complaints

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Saturday, 8 October 2022.

Stelling on Marsch

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has once again been criticised for his complaints on Aston Villa’s time-wasting last weekend, this time by Jeff Stelling. Marsch was left frustrated in his post-match interview on Villa’s game-management tactics during the first half.

The former Leipzig boss felt Villa were looking to slow Leeds down at every opportunity and even apologised to supporters post-match. Stelling, though, was not having any of Marsch’s complaints, labelling it as hypocritical after Leeds’ second half display with 10 men.

He joked live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday: “Sorry, I’m just killing abit of time, that’s all. I’m not sure what Jesse Marsch is going to think of it. Seriously, it was a bit rich to criticise Villa for wasting time but when Leeds went down to 10 men, they killed every minute they could.”

Bamford and Rodrigo

Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo Moreno could start together for just the third time this season when Leeds United travel to Crystal Palace. With Luis Sinisterra suspended, a place has opened up in the Whites’ attack and Bamford appears the most likely to take it based on Jesse Marsch’s comments in his pre-match press conference.

Since Rodrigo’s arrival at Elland Road back in the summer of 2020, Leeds have played 83 league matches. Once it was established that Rodrigo was favoured more as a number 10, it was expected that the Spaniard would be able to form a partnership with Bamford.

However, due to injury problems for Rodrigo in 2020/21, and the same for Bamford in 2021/22, the two have been able to start together just 21 times. On three of those occasions one of them also had to be substituted in the first half.

What makes that statistic perhaps more frustrating is the fact Leeds actually have an impressive record when both are named in the starting XI. The Whites have won on 11 occasions, giving them a win rate of over 50%.

Leeds eye Rangers youngster

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing young Rangers defender Jack Wylie. That is according to Football Insider, who claim that the Whites will battle it out with Arsenal for the signature of the Scottish starlet.

Both Leeds and Arsenal are said to have sent scouts to watch Wylie in action for Rangers and Scotland’s Under-16s side, with the two clubs impressed with what they’ve seen. Rangers are fearful of losing Wylie as he is not eligible to sign professional terms until he turns 16 in January, which could allow Leeds to swoop in.

Should he make the move to Elland Road, Wylie would not be the first Glasgow-based starlet to make the switch this season. Leeds secured the arrival of Celtic goalkeeper Rory Mahady last month, who has already featured for the club’s Under-18s side.
