Leeds United news as Jamie Carragher blasts 'deluded' Sam Allardyce for Pep Guardiola comparison

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines on Friday, May 5.

Jamie Carragher blasts 'deluded' Sam Allardyce

Jamie Carragher has lablled Leeds United interim head coach Sam Allardyce as "deluded" for comparing himself to Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp.

During his first official press conference as interim head coach, Allardyce told the media that there is no other coach in world football better than him when it comes to his level of knowledge for the game.

"Far too many people think that that I am old and antiquated which is not fair," he said. "So far from the truth. I might be 68 and look old. There’s nobody ahead of me in football terms.

"Not Pep [Guardiola], not [Jurgen] Klopp, not [Mikel] Arteta. They do what they do, I do what I do. But in terms of depth of knowledge, I am up there with them. I am not saying I am better than them, but I am as good as them.”

The comments raised eyebrows around the footballing world and despite many taking them with a pinch of salt, Carragher has slammed the 68-year-old for his remarks.

Writing in his Daily Telegraph column, the former Liverpool defender penned: "Can you imagine the reaction if an overseas coach with no major honours to his name introduced himself to a Premier League club in such a way?

"How would Brighton’s manager, Roberto de Zerbi, have been received had he declared himself on the same level of two of the most successful managers of the modern era? At best ill-advised, and at worst deluded...

"With respect, if Allardyce was in charge of the current Manchester City or Liverpool squad, there isn’t a chance they would be playing the possession or ‘gegenpressing’ game that has brought their respective coaches every honour."

Gary Neville makes huge Leeds United call which could blow Man City v Arsenal race open

Gary Neville has claimed that although it would be the "shock of all shocks" should Leeds United beat Manchester City, he believes that Sam Allardyce is capable of producing a "miracle" on Saturday afternoon.

Allardyce takes charge of the first of four games as Leeds interim head coach this weekend with a trip to the reigning champions. The clubs could not be further apart in terms of form and league position.

The Whites conceded 23 goals in April, while Man City have netted 20 times in their last six league matches - averaging more than three goals a game in that time period. Allardyce knows that if he has any hope of keeping Leeds in the Premier League, the goals against column needs to instantly improve.

Pep Guardiola makes thrashing Leeds United 'not reality' claim after Sam Allardyce comment

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has claimed that his side must be wary of Leeds United and that thrashing Sam Allardyce's Whites is 'not in the reality'.

The Citizens retook their position at the top of the Premier League on Wednesday with a 3-0 win over West Ham in which striker Erling Haaland scored his record-breaking 35th league goal of the season.

But with Leeds set for the fabled 'new manager bounce' thanks to the sacking of Javi Gracia and the introduction of 68-year-old Allardyce, Guardiola admitted that people should not always expect his side to run out to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.
