Leeds United news as Habib Habibou labels Whites loan move as a 'very bad idea'

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines for Wednesday, January 18.

Habib Habibou labels Leeds loan move as a 'very bad idea'

Habib Habibou says that joining Leeds United on loan earlier in his career was one of his two biggest regrets. The 35-year-old starred for Paris Saint-Germain at youth level, before he started his professional career in Belgium.

He joined Leeds from Zulte Waregem on loan in January 2013 but amassed just 77 minutes of action in the Championship across four appearances. He was unable to oust Steve Morison or Ross McCormack from the starting XI, and embarked on a nomadic career with clubs in France, Turkey, Qatar, Israel and Belgium once again.

Habibou, who is now a free agent, had scored 13 goals in Belgium in 2012-13 prior to joining Leeds, and the forward wishes he'd stayed at Zulte Waregem in hindsight.

“I wanted to leave Zulte Waregem in the January 2013 transfer window when I was already at 13 goals and I was a hit,” he told DH.

“West Ham were on it. I even waited in a hotel in Canary Wharf in London for the transfer to be formalised, but agents screwed up the deal at the last minute and everything was cancelled.

“When I got back to Waregem, I forced myself to leave anyway. Playing in England was my dream. I signed in Leeds in the Championship, and it was a very bad idea. If I had stayed at Zulte, I think we would have won the title and I could have made a better transfer afterwards.

'Not fit for second fiddle' - Leeds United's Rasmus Kristensen slammed after last Cardiff display

Jon Newsome believes Rasmus Kristensen is not 'good enough for second fiddle' after his poor display in Leeds United's 2-2 draw against Cardiff City earlier this month.

Kristensen was restored to the starting line-up, after losing his starting place to Luke Ayling in the Whites' back-to-back draws against Newcastle United and West Ham respectively.

The Danish international struggled in the Welsh capital and was replaced by Cody Drameh after just 59 minutes with Leeds trailing by two goals to nil. Former Leeds defender Newsome argued that Ayling should be ahead of Kristensen in the pecking order, and doesn't understand how his right-back position is under threat.

Leeds United supporters love Mateusz Klich's 'superb' Robert Lewandowski signing joke

Mateusz Klich has given Leeds United supporters one last laugh ahead of an emotional send off this evening. The Whites are giving the midfielder an opportunity to say his farewells to supporters at tonight's game against Cardiff City.

The 32-year-old has joked that international team-mate Robert Lewandowski is set to join the Whites from Barcelona, after a cryptic tweet from the Whites telling supporters to get into seats with plenty time.

The Poland international will head to the MLS to link up with Wayne Rooney's DC United, bringing an end to his six-year tenure at Elland Road. Klich was part of the Leeds team than won the Championship title in 2020 but will head off to chase the 'American dream.'
