Leeds United news as Gary Neville sends 'big trouble' warning ahead of relegation d-day

A look at the latest Leeds United headlines this morning on Monday, May 22.

Leeds United in 'big trouble'

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville says Leeds United are in big trouble heading into the final day of the season. That won't come as a surprise to any Whites' supporters with their side in the bottom three heading into their clash with Tottenham Hotspur next weekend.

Defeat to West Ham leaves Sam Allardyce's side two points adrift of safety, with Everton in 17th on 32 points. A win is the only thing that will keep Leeds United up on the final day of the season.

Neville told Sky Sports: "It’s going to take a lot now for Leeds after what’s just happened earlier. They’re in big trouble."

Here are the talking points from a bleak day in east London for Leeds United...

Staring into the abyss

Anything can happen on any day at the football, but if you’re honest with yourself, Leeds United are staring into the abyss this morning. Less than three years after escaping a 16-year stretch, the Whites are well en route to a reunion with the EFL in August.

Yesterday was the latest in a long line of opportunities Leeds have been served up before returning the plate to the kitchen because it’s too hot to handle. The Whites weren’t able to stand the heat yesterday and it’s felt that way since the start of last season, really.

If the penny hadn’t dropped at Craven Cottage or Dean Court in April, it went smashing through London Stadium’s false floor on Sunday afternoon. This team’s repeated failures are stacking up and they are hurtling towards the Premier League’s trap door.

Leeds United are staring down the barrel, after a 3-1 defeat at West Ham left then needing to rely on other results on the final day of the season if they are to stay in the Premier League.

Sam Allardyce's men knew that a win in east London would mean their fate would be in their own hands next weekend, but the disappointing defeat means that an Everton win at home to Bournemouth will send Leeds down, regardless of how the Whites perform against Tottenham at Elland Road.

Leeds began well at the London Stadium, with Rodrigo opening the scoring, but a Declan Rice equaliser was followed by second-half strikes from Jarrod Bowen and Manuel Lanzini. Allardyce's men had no answer and a 20th defeat of the season followed.

Leeds United transfer rumours as in-demand midfielder scouted, left-back linked

Leeds United among Premier League sides to send scouts to watch midfielder

Leeds United have been listed among a gaggle of Premier League clubs that have dispatched scouts to watch Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra, according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The 19-year-old was reportedly also watched by Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, both the Manchester side, Tottenham, West Ham and Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Villa and Wolves said to be leading the race for the defensive midfielder, who has been valued at £20million.
