Leeds United news as FC Zurich president discusses finances behind the Wilfried Gnonto deal

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Monday, 5 September 2022.

Gnonto deal

Leeds United could eventually end up paying in excess of £10 million for striker Wilfried Gnonto, according to FC Zurich president Ancillo Canepa. The Whites completed a deal for the Italy international on deadline day, with some section of the Swiss club’s supporters criticising the fee they received.

Gnonto was set to be out of contract at the end of the season but Leeds decided to swoop in early to beat the competition. Speaking to Blick, Canepa insists the fee potential fee represents a good piece of business for FC Zurich.

He said: “These people are clueless. (They) don’t know the contract details. The transfer took place under the conditions we had imagined. We negotiated well and didn’t let ourselves be disturbed; even if the transfer was only registered five minutes before the end of the window.”

“Everything in the contract remains confidential. But yes, there is a very good chance that the transfer fee will eventually exceed ten million.”

Ref watch

Dermot Gallagher believes there was too much of an element of doubt surrounding Leeds United's penalty claim against Brentford. Crysencio Summerville was dragged to the floor by Brentford’s Aaron Hickey in what Leeds United thought was a stonewall penalty.

Jesse Marsch was sent off for his remonstrations after the incident with VAR's decision to ignore the incident, adding to this weekend's controversy. The Premier League officials came under fire in games including Newcastle United's tie with Crystal Palace and West Ham's clash with Chelsea.

The Whites head coach will now miss the game against Nottingham Forest at Elland Road.

Gallagher told Sky Sports: "I think what happened here, the shirt pull he doesn't see, the VAR can't act. As he's going into the box he lets go and we come back to threshold, this is the dilemma we've had today, if he'd of pulled the shirt like he did, going into the box then without a doubt penalty.”

Sutton on VAR

Chris Sutton has slammed VAR for a 'lack of consistency' following Robert Jones and David Coote's call to ignore Leeds United penalty claims at Brentford. Crysencio Summerville was dragged to the floor by Brentford’s Aaron Hickey but neither the referee or VAR looked at the incident.

The decision left Jesse Marsch incensed - adding more fuel to the fire after Brentford were awarded a penalty in the first half - Whites' boss was shown a red card for his actions in the aftermath. The head coach will now miss next week's clash with Nottingham Forest at Elland Road.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Sutton said: "In Brentford against Leeds, Ivan Toney won a penalty when referee Robert Jones was told by VAR David Coote that there was a foul by Luis Sinisterra. He was right — there had been and this was a worthy spot-kick.

"But then when Leeds’ Crysencio Summerville was dragged down by Brentford’s Aaron Hickey in the second half, nothing happened. No VAR intervention. No visit to the monitor for Jones.”
