Leeds United news as emotional farewell comes after 16-year Elland Road spell ends

Here are this morning's latest Leeds United headlines on Wednesday, June 28.

Alfie McCalmont's emotional farewell

Leeds United confirmed on Tuesday evening that midfielder Alfie McCalmont has left the club to join Carlisle United for an undisclosed fee. The Northern Ireland international spent last season on loan at Brunton Park, helping the team win promotion to League One and will now end his 16-year Elland Road association.

Posting on Instagram after the move was confirmed, McCalmont issued an emotional farewell message detailing how he was able to achieve his 'dream' during his time at the club.

"After 16 years, my time has come to an end with Leeds United," he posted. "I would like to thank all the players & staff who I have worked with over the years for making me into a better player and also a better person.

"The memories we created will last a life time! My dream since I was 8 years old starting out at the club was to be able to walk out onto the pitch at Elland Road in front of a full house. It’s time for the next chapter in my career which I am looking forward too! See you soon, MOT

Leeds United can benefit by strengthening rivals with Perkins show of faith

Sonny Perkins needs first-team football in order to continue his rapid development as a footballer. The Leeds United forward made that much clear last season with his eye-catching performances for the club’s Under-21s as the Whites won Premier League 2 Division 2 promotion.

Perkins managed to bag himself 13 goals at youth level in what was his first season with the club, following his switch from West Ham United last summer. A chunk of those came in the opening few months of the campaign, too, as the 19-year-old announced himself to United fans by bagging eight in his first seven games.

His goals in the youth team saw him make three senior appearances for the Whites and while he is still waiting for his first league run out, he does have a first-team goal to his name, notching a late equaliser in the FA Cup third round at Cardiff City. He’s one supporters will be keeping an eye on this season, then, eager to see how the England U19 international progresses into the senior ranks.

Daily agent phone calls and 'street mentality' made Leeds life 'very difficult'

A street mentality around Leeds United’s training ground made things choppy for Crysencio Summerville in an opening six months he now admits were ‘very difficult’ for him. The Dutch winger has bemoaned his poor English, living in a hotel and away from his favourite people during a transition in which he was calling his agent every day for an escape route.

Last night, Summerville was involved as the Netherlands crashed out of the European Under-21 Championship at the group stage. The 21-year-old will now take a long-awaited break and consider his future.

There are another three years to run on the contract Summerville signed last August, but he has already admitted this month he does not know if he will be at Elland Road next year. Summerville had made it clear, more than once, his agent was under strict instructions to hold back any transfer talk until after the summer tournament.

In an interview with Voetbal International, as reported by Feyenoord news platform 1908.nl, Summerville has looked back to the start of his time with the Whites. The forward joined Leeds in September 2020 as an 18-year-old from the Rotterdam outfit.
