Leeds United news as Daniel Farke's promotion credentials backed

Here are the latest morning Leeds United headlines on Tuesday, June 13.

Palmer backs Farke for Leeds but wary of Celtic interest

Former Leeds United and England midfielder Carlton Palmer believes that his former club would 'fancy their chances' of promotion if they hired Daniel Farke as their new head coach. The former Norwich City boss is one of several names to be linked with the vacant post at Elland Road as the club look to follow up Friday's announcement that a takeover deal has been agreed with movement on the football side of dealings.

Leeds have been without a head coach since Sam Allardyce parted company with the club last week, but Palmer believes the experience of Farke, who has won two promotions with Norwich City, would be a good move.

"This would be a popular appointment from the Leeds United supporters' perspective," Palmer told Football League World. "Daniel guided Norwich to the Premier League with ease, so he's been there and done it.

"You know there's going to be high profile departures from Leeds due to relegation, [but] given the money that will be at his disposal, you would fancy his chances of getting Leeds back to the Premier League at the first attempt."

Farke has also been linked with the vacant job at Celtic and Palmer fears that the Scottish Premiership champions could be a bigger draw for the German.

"Celtic, a big, big club would be hard to turn down if he was offered a contract."

Leeds United caught in two minds running transfer risk before boss is appointed

Leeds United’s first squad-related announcement since 49ers Enterprises’ breakthrough summed up where the club is at in this moment. The limbo the club finds itself in, between head coaches, recruitment chiefs and owners, is akin to where Adam Forshaw and Joel Robles find themselves currently.

In 17 days they will officially be free agents and out of contract on the open market. Leeds, though, have an interest in keeping them on board. There’s an invitation to return for pre-season training on the table, but no contract as yet.

In Forshaw’s case, a deal was already in place for the club to trigger a 12-month extension, but, evidently, the board were not comfortable with those terms. Understandably, the Whites are keeping their options as open as possible while they wait for the new owners to finalise their takeover and the ultimate appointment of a head coach.

Leeds United have Farke promotion blueprint on quick pre-season and late sales

Leeds United want to bounce back from relegation and return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Not many teams have managed it. Since the 1992/93 campaign, just 26 of the 94 relegated sides have returned the following season.

In recent history, there are three sides who have managed it. Watford and Norwich City recovered from 2020 relegations to finish in the Championship’s top two at the end of 2020/21. Then, last season, Burnley stormed the table after going down in 2022.

LeedsLive has spoken to Michael Bailey of The Athletic for some insight into how the Canaries achieved their bounce back in 2021. It was Daniel Farke’s fourth full campaign at the Carrow Road helm.
