Leeds United news as Collymore teases 'massive' Kalvin Phillips and Erling Haaland partnership

Your latest Leeds United evening headlines for Wednesday, June 29.

Collymore claims Phillips and Haaland will strike-up "massive" Man City partnership

Former England international Stan Collymore believes Kalvin Phillips and Erling Haaland will strike up at deadly partnership at Manchester City next season. Phillips looks set to join the Premier League champions from Leeds United in the coming days after the two sides agreed to a £42m deal for the midfield maestro.

Earlier in the summer window, they signed Erling Haaland, giving Pep Guardiola even more firepower to work with in Man City's star studded front-line. And Collymore reckons Phillps and Haaland could strike up a relationship on the pitch that would make Man City even more deadly.

"Kalvin Phillips is a very good signing for any top club," Collymore told the Daily Mirror. "A lot of people think he is coming in as Fernandinho’s replacement and that he’ll be going head-to-head with Rodri, and, yes, to a degree that could be the case.

“But I do wonder if specifically this has been a very clever move by Pep Guardiola to get someone in who has in his locker that longer pass over the top, which is not something City have used very often in the past.

“Because if you’re going to play with Haaland, who can run over the top on the counter, play it to someone’s chest, play it to someone’s feet, then someone like Phillips picking the ball up in his own half, lifting his head and then winging a 30-yard pass over a centre half’s head for him to run on to is a very clever move.

“Regardless, we will see Phillips feature much more than people suggest and his relationship with Haaland will be massive."

Man City insider on Leeds United's Darko Gyabi target

Leeds United are expected to make Manchester City midfielder Darko Gyabi their fourth signing of the summer. Gyabi looks set to swap places with the departing Kalvin Phillips, with the 18-year-old understood to be close to signing for Leeds for £5m.

While he has yet to make a senior appearance for Man City, Gyabi is promising prospect.

And LeedsLive's Beren Cross sat down with the Manchester Evening News' Simon Bajkowski to learn more about the highly rated teenager.

Spurs turn to ex-Leeds United man

Former Leeds United coach Gianni Vio looks set to join Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspurs. According to Football London, Conte has been keen to get Vio on board, with the latter regarded as a set-piece expert.

Vio, who was in charge of Italy's set-pieces at Euro 2020, spent time at Elland Road during the 2017/18 Championship season under Thomas Christiansen's reign. However, while he was hailed as one of the best in the business when it came to set-pieces, his time at Leeds ultimately flattered to deceive.

After five months in the job only four sides had scored fewer goals from set-pieces than Leeds and he would end up leaving the club in June 2018.
