Leeds are among the 13 Premier League clubs not competing in European competition, and will enter the draw alongside Championship sides Burnley and Watford.
The competition remains regionalised in the early rounds with the draw split into a southern and northern section until the third round.
The second round will take place on the week commencing August 22.. Leeds prevailed 3-0 against Crewe Alexandra in the second round last term and went onto reach the fourth round.
Leeds won the League Cup in 1968 and also finished runners-up in 1996. The Whites longest run in the competition since then has come in the shape of two quarter-final finishes in 2012/13 and 2016/17 respectively.
Skubala backs Perkins to succeed
New Leeds United under-21s coach Michael Skubala is confident Sonny Perkins has what it takes to succeed at Elland Road. Perkins completed his switch to West Yorkshire from West Ham United last month after impressing in the Hammers’ youth ranks for several years.
Perkins is highly thought of by those at Leeds and he showed why with an eye-catching performance on Friday night for the club’s U21 side against Derby County. Mateo Joseph was Leeds’ standout performer at Pride Park, bagging four goals in a 5-2 victory, but Perkins grabbed the other for the Whites to mark his first appearance for his new goal with a goal.
“I’ve worked with Sonny for a year with England under-18s, so I know Sonny really well,” Skubala said. “He’s a great athlete, a superb, humble human being.”
Adams close to top form, says Marsch
Jesse Marsch believes Tyler Adams is close to top form at present following his strong Leeds United debut on Saturday. The midfielder made his first start for the Whites at Elland Road and played his part to help Marsch’s side pick up their first points of the new Premier League season.
He featured alongside fellow summer recruit Marc Roca and proved to be a constant pest in the middle of the park, putting pressure on Wolves’ midfield as he looked to break up play. Marsch knows Adams well, of course, having worked with him at New York Red Bulls and RB Leipzig, and the American pair have a very strong relationship.
“Quite good,” Marsch said when asked about Adams’ performance. “Any time he was within 5-10 yards of the ball, he was able to put pressure on the opponent
“I think he won a lot of duels, picked up a lot of loose balls. He was very clever and clear and calm on the ball. Yeah, I think he provided a real presence for us in midfield.”
