Leeds United man takes part in jubilant street celebrations as Spanish club reach cup final

Deemed surplus to requirements last summer, Leeds United winger Helder Costa has spent the 2021/22 season on loan with LaLiga side Valencia.

Last night, the storied Spanish club reached the Copa del Rey final after defeating Marcelo Bielsa's former employers Athletic Club over two legs.

A 1-0 scoreline at Mestalla on Wednesday night sparked jubilant scenes in the streets of Valencia, which including the entire Los Che squad.

Costa was pictured alongside his teammates celebrating with supporters who came out in their droves to congratulate the team on their first Copa del Rey final since 2019.

Valencia are gunning for their ninth domestic cup win in their history, with Leeds' Rodrigo ultimately scoring the winning goal three years ago in a 2-1 victory over Barcelona.

Costa has not played a great deal whilst on loan, however.

Since the turn of the year, the 28-year-old has featured just three times in the league, with a handful of cameo appearances in the Valencians' cup run for good measure.

During last night's fixture, Costa remained an unused substitute.

The Angolan international featured twice for Leeds this season before heading out on loan, in the 5-1 defeat to Manchester United on the opening day, and in the 3-0 League Cup victory over Crewe Alexandra at Elland Road.

Costa's contract expires at Elland Road in 2024, therefore it is likely he will return to Leeds in some capacity this summer.

While he has been a regular fixture of the Valencia side this season, his impact has been limited, and in recent weeks restricted to appearances from the substitutes' bench.

It is understood there is an option-to-buy in Costa's loan agreement, but whether Valencia exercise that remains to be seen.

Nevertheless, Costa now has a cup final date versus Rayo Vallecano or Real Betis to look forward to before his likely return to Leeds at the end of the season.
