Leeds United legend says rivals Chelsea's hiring of Frank Lampard is 'total rubbish'

Leeds United legend John Giles believes that historic rivals Chelsea's move to hire Frank Lampard as an interim manager for the rest of the season is 'total rubbish'.

The new Chelsea boss and former England international played at Stamford Bridge for 13 years before becoming manager in 2019 until he was sacked in 2021.

Following a stint at Everton, which also saw him sacked earlier this season, Lampard has returned to the Blues to replace Graham Potter who was let go just seven months into his time at Chelsea.

"It's total rubbish," Giles said on The Football Show. "Frank Lampard is coming until the end of the season, I can't see him performing miracles until the end of the season to get the job again.

"Potter is only there this season. A lot of the signings he hasn't been responsible for, the owners are responsible for them. Why not let Potter stay on until the end of the season?

"See if he can get a grip of the situation. There's so many players that they've bought it's difficult to do so. He's not responsible for that."

Lampard is the fourth manager Chelsea have had this season, following on from interim Bruno Saltor who himself replaced Graham Potter who replaced Thomas Tuchel when he was sacked back in September.

"It's madhouse, Chelsea, at the moment," Giles continued. "I can't see any sense in getting Frank Lampard in when you've just had a manager in.

"Give him a little bit of time, because he's not had time to put his stamp on it."
