English football set to have independent regulator introduced in the new year
English football will have a new independent regulator introduced in the new year following a government review.
A Daily Mail exclusive has revealed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is said to have signed off on the implementation of a new regulator to oversee English football just months after the Premier League believed they had seen off its threat.
While an official announcement is not expected to take place until the new year, the proposed regulator would be appointed by a select panel to oversee the issues surrounding football.

The news will come as a blow to Leeds United's chief executive Angus Kinnear, who described the potential implementation of a regulator "akin to Maoist collective agriculturalism", suggesting it would kill off competition within the sport.
While he did praise many of the recommendations made in the recent fan-led football review, Kinnear wrote in his programme notes last year ahead of the Whites clash against Crystal Palace: "Football is a private sector business and has flourished that way.
"Enforcing upon football a philosophy akin to Maoist collective agriculturalism (which students of 'The Great Leap Forward' will know culminated in the greatest famine in history) will not make the English game fairer, it will kill the competition which is its very lifeblood."
However, it is likely the clubs that will be heaviest impacted by the introduction of a new regulator are the six Premier League sides who tried to breakaway from the top flight in favour of joining the failed European Super League project.
Paul Robinson urges Leeds United and Victor Orta to make 'statement signing' in January
Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged Leeds United and Victor Orta to avoid recently-linked La Liga striker Matheus Cunha and make a 'statement signing' instead in the January transfer window.
Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto reported earlier this month that the Whites were interested in the Brazilian forward who has had a tough time adjusting to Atletico Madrid after just seven goals in his 54 appearances in the Spanish top-flight.
Leeds have been reportedly looking at the market closely for a new striker and Robinson made a case earlier this week that they should find a replacement for Patrick Bamford after his injury problems.
"He’s [Cunha] not playing much and not getting much game time at Atletico Madrid," Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
"You would like to see Leeds United make a statement signing for a striker – a signing that would keep them in the league this season."
Rodrigo details Jesse Marsch 'leadership council' duties amid Leeds United training camp
Leeds United star Rodrigo has revealed his responsibilities as a member of manager Jesse Marsch's 'senior leadership team' at Elland Road as the Whites continue their Spanish training camp.
The 31-year-old has netted nine times already this campaign and has been a vital member of the squad in recent weeks having managed five goals in his last four league games for Leeds.
But the Spaniard isn't just responsible for his own performances on the pitch - it's also off the pitch where he tries to help everyone from giving up-and-coming stars advice as well as just drumming up a cheerful atmosphere around the club.
"I think we're just trying to create a positive atmosphere in the squad with everyone, trying to help the younger lads that are coming into the first team now," Rodrigo told the Official Leeds United Podcast.
"Honestly, we don't have to do anything super special but it's just about trying to create a good atmosphere with everyone, create a positive vibe in the group and compete at the highest level."
