Leeds United have already cleared first hurdle in face-to-face January transfer window talks

Selling your house will throw up those 11th-hour dilemmas when something needs fixing. Do you foot the bill yourself, keeping the property in decent condition before its changed hands, or do you refuse to pour any more of your hard-earned cash into a solution you won’t be around to enjoy?

Andrea Radrizzani and 49ers Enterprises would be forgiven for having a similar dilemma in the weeks approaching January’s transfer window. The Athletic first reported the American consortium’s option to take control before January 2024. They would be into the final 12 months of that deal when the next transfer window opens.

The clock is ticking on this deal to go through, though there may be room for renegotiation on both sides, there are only two transfer windows to go before it expires. If San Francisco 49ers’ investment arm really does want to seize control via this route, the jigsaw pieces have to fall into place sooner rather than later.

The Times reported financial ducks were being put in a row behind the scenes across the Atlantic earlier this month. That story kept this takeover tale alive just when it felt like momentum was waning in the void left by Paraag Marathe et al.

The coming transfer window is an important jumping-off point in this timeline. When Radrizzani last spoke publicly about the takeover in August, there was no hint of an imminent exit in his words.

Based on the way Jesse Marsch has spoken in recent weeks, he has seen no drop in the Italian’s intensity or commitment to the cause at Elland Road. Radrizzani is a shrewd businessman and he will know all too well what’s coming down the road if the 49ers vehicle gets more serious about taking on the Whites.

In a window where Leeds badly need another left-back and striker, will the chairman be as keen as usual to generate the eight-figure kitty likely to be needed when he knows the Americans may swoop in the near future? Will Jed York, Peter Lowy and the other investors be keen to prop up the window’s business before they officially have the reins?

Victor Orta’s summer dealings are bearing fruit for Leeds, but the recent Jean-Kevin Augustin debacle has thrown shade on affairs. The director of football could do with a successful January and needs financial backing to clinch his prime targets.

Thankfully, the ball has long been in motion on the winter market. York and senior representatives from the top of the 49ers were at Elland Road for the final home match before the World Cup break.

Crucial face-to-face talks were held and as each window ticks closer to American control, there is an acknowledgement on both sides they cannot allow for stasis on the shopping front. Time will tell what January brings for Leeds, but the ball is at least in motion on who’s picking up the tab.
