Leeds United forward Sam Greenwood has stated that he feels Jesse Marsch’s tactics suits his style of play more so than Marcelo Bielsa. Greenwood has come off the bench to make impressive cameo appearances in two of the last three matches, registering an assist in both of them.
Following his very impactful performance in the win at Watford on Saturday, Marsch claimed that out of anyone in the squad, Greenwood has made the most seamless transition to his tactics. This has been reflected in him receiving more opportunities in the first team.
Under Bielsa, Leeds operated with a man-to-man marking system when out of possession, meaning players were handed the specific duty of pressing one player. However, under Marsch, Leeds instead use a more zonal style of play, meaning that they instead use specific trigger points to initiate a press.

Speaking on the Official Leeds United Podcast, Greenwood stated that Marsch’s style of pressing suits him down to the ground as it enables him to show his ‘aggression’ to win the ball back.
He said: “I think I suit this style of play a bit more to be honest. With Bielsa it was man to man but with this style you don’t have to stay with the man, basically you can stay in between two men and if it goes to the left side you can all go as a team.
“Instead of focusing on one guy so much you can jump to a different man and that suits me to a tee basically. I love showing pressing and aggression off the ball.”
