Leeds United and Burnley have dropped their complaints regarding Everton’s transfer expenditure after receiving assurances from the Premier League, according to Mail Online .
The two clubs had threatened to sue the league for £200million as a result of their failure to act on the Toffees spending which, they claimed, was a breach of Financial Fair Play regulations.
Such regulations limit top-flight sides a loss of £105million over a three-year period - less than a third of Everton’s declaration of £371.8million over that period - but there were leniencies regarding losses due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
But Leeds and Burnley had claimed that the Toffees used the pandemic to attribute transfer spending elsewhere in a bid to curb regulations - Everton denied such claims.
The Goodison Park club’s financial reports in March attributed £170million losses to Covid-related issues, compared to £24million for Leeds. And that encouraged the Whites and Burnley to make their challenge.
But the report states that the Premier League have now provided added evidence that Everton complied with the regulations and all their losses have been accounted for.
Leeds’ acceptance of the evidence may have been softened by their Premier League survival, with the huge financial losses of relegation avoided.
The Whites started the final day in the bottom three, but a last-minute winner at Brentford coupled with Burnley's defeat against Newcastle meant it was the Clarets who faced the drop.
Those in charge of the legal side in West Yorkshire may also be hesitant to enter another long and expensive legal battle, following the ongoing issues regarding the Jean-Kevin Augustin situation.
