Leeds United alerted by manager's comments on former transfer target

Graham Potter's recent comments on young centre back Haydon Roberts may be of interest to Leeds United. Victor Orta has a long standing interest in the teenager and made an attempt to sign him in 2020, only to be rebuffed.

Instead, Roberts was loaned to Rochdale. He managed 26 appearances in League One last season and returned to Brighton with hopes of featuring in some capacity for the first-team. However, he has been limited to just three Carabao Cup appearances, alongside playing in Premier League Two for the U23 side.

Potter spoke about the youngster at a recent press conference and inferred that next season would be important for him as he would get game-time. However, it is unclear whether the plan is for him to be given a chance at the AMEX or to move out on loan. Leeds may still have an interest in the England youth international but would surely only want a permanent deal.

"Like any player, there comes a point where you need to play football, and play football more regularly. I think he has learnt a lot and grown but to get the benefit of this period he needs to go and play football and hopefully next season that can be the plan," Potter told Sussex Live.

However, since their pursuit of Roberts, Charlie Cresswell has made a leap forwards in his development and has performed admirably in his five Premier League appearances. Alongside Cresswell, Leeds also have Leo Hjelde as a young option at centre back.
