Leeds sisters and daughter win prestigious award for helping people on the streets

A Leeds woman and her daughter were both award winners at the Simply Ladies Awards 2022 for women in the community and rising star.

Becky Joyce, who runs Homeless Street Angel's charity in Leeds, West Yorkshire, was 'proud' to win the award with the help of her twin sister - as well as her daughter, who won the rising star award for her volunteering work since being 7-years-old.

The charity was set up in 2016 after Becky and her twin, Shelley, tragically lost their sister - the pair are also hoping to raise money to open a community centre in her memory.

Homeless Street Angels take to the streets every Thursday night to save people by helping to rehome them, help to sort them a home, guidance with bills and addictions, and to help them continuously - during lockdown the charity also set up a food bank.

Their long-term goal is to open a day centre in memory of their sister Abi - the community hub will be a place for people to go for guidance and support.

Becky said: "I was so proud to win the award but it's for my twin sister as well.

"I'm the loud one out on the streets and she's the one in the background running everything so it's a massive team effort not just for me.

"I was so proud Naomi got recognised, she does so much.

"My daughter has come out on the streets since she was 7-years-old to help, it all started one Christmas when we went out to give goodie bags and realised we could do so much more.

"We have people queuing up waiting for us on a Thursday night, even the people who we have previously helped, they like the company."

The charity got a huge response from Facebook community group, Leedsplace, with over 850 people commenting to say the whole of the city is backing them.

Becky added: "I'm just so proud that we have done it and we are backing Leeds.

This Saturday, March 12, it will be their sister's birthday who sadly died - Becky will be taking part in a skydive to raise £5,000 towards launching their day centre, which will be called Abi house in her memory - they have £451 left to raise out of their target.
