Leeds Rhinos are in the driving seat to secure a deal for League 1 star Leon Ruan. The 19-year-old, currently contracted to Doncaster, has spent the last two weeks training with the Rhinos and is thought to have made a major impression on coach Rohan Smith during his short time at Headingley.
Leeds are not alone in chasing Ruan, who came through the academy system at Wakefield Trinity. A stack of Super League clubs have all been vying for his signature after catching the eye for the Dons throughout the season. A back-rower, Ruan has been a regular for Doncaster this year. They are currently fourth in the third tier.
He is understood to have commanded interest from clubs in both Super League and the Championship 12 months ago but made the decision to play in League 1 due to a desire to play regularly at first-team level. That saw him turn down a number of clubs higher up the pyramid given his preference was to secure regular game time in the men's game.

That has seemingly paid dividends, with Ruan in high demand once again. The Rhinos drafted in Ruan last month to see him up close and personal and they are now keen to make his stay a permanent one after impressing within the week.
Leeds' interest in Ruan is further proof of Smith's desire to bring in new, young talent. The Rhinos coach is keen to bring the average age of the squad down as part of the long-term vision he has for the club.
So far, the club has signed James McDonnell and Justin Sangare and they are currently exploring the possibility of signing Batley Bulldogs fullback Luke Hooley. The trio are all in their early to mid-twenties.
