Leeds pub's April Fools' Day 'joke' backfires as boss admits he was 'naive' and 'made a mistake'

A pub in Leeds has made a public apology after they received criticism for their April Fools' Day joke.

Myrtle Tavern Meanwood posted the joke to their Facebook page where it received criticism from members of the community. The pub said, as part of the joke, that their bar staff would be referred to as "bartheys" instead of barmaids or barmen.

They made reference to the singer Sam Smith and then said the entire "themu" would be vegan.

The joke did not go down well with people and the post was deleted by the pub. Later on, they put out an apology, which read: "This mornings post was intended an Aprils fools joke. We deleted it as it caused offence to people.

"This was never our intention and as anyone who knows us are aware, we are and always have been an all inclusive pub. We welcome everyone with open arms, always have always will.

"We all make mistakes and we recognise this was one of them. Sincere apologies."

In addition, the manager of Myrtle Tavern Meanwood, Scott Westlake, said: "I personally would like to apologise, as a member of the LGBT community, I should have known better, and in a moment of stupidity shouldn't have made a joke about this.

"I will take accountability for any hurt caused. I have received 100s of messages, I was naive to these issues and I'm learning from my mistake.

"I'll continue to learn more and educate myself, during this time I will be stepping back from the social media pages and handing over that role. We are and always have been inclusive and everyone's welcome."
