Leeds 'legend' answers viral call to deliver birthday cake ordered 250 miles away by mistake

A cake maker says she has been left 'astounded' after a thoughtful Leeds man delivered a birthday cake to a customer who mistakenly ordered it from more than 250 miles away.

Wendy Neary, who runs Wendy's Cakes, Bakes & Makes in Rothwell, said she received an order for a customised 60th birthday cake from a man who wanted to surprise his wife on her special day. Wendy said she and her customer, Ian Cameron, agreed on a design and arranged for him to collect the cake on Wednesday (July 27).

But the cake maker woke up to a message from Ian explaining that he had mistakenly ordered the cake from 254 miles away in Fife, Scotland, after getting her details from Google. "Last night (Tues) I completed the cake and emailed him saying he could collect it at 10am this morning (Weds). I also gave him my full address," said Wendy.

"I woke up to his reply email saying he had paid the outstanding balance but he hadn't realised my location as he had got my details from Google after he asked for 'cake makers nearby'. He thanked me for doing the cake and basically left it at that."

Wendy said she was "gutted" for her customer and "wanted him to get the cake he had ordered and paid for." After receiving the email from Ian, Wendy posted an appeal to the Facebook group 'Leedsplace'.

The Leeds cake maker explained the situation to the group's 152,000 members before asking: "So, is anyone travelling up there who wouldn't mind helping a chap out? I know it's a long shot but you never know if you don't ask!"

Wendy instantly received a reply from Eleanor whose husband, Chris, was travelling to Inverness. "I was astounded," she said. "Chris phoned me and said he was happy to drop the cake off en route to Inverness. They only live 15 minutes away from me, so I jumped in my car with the cake and dropped it off.

"Chris and Eleanor are so lovely and genuine people. Chris was happy to help and said he would get a photo handing the cake over to Ian - my Scottish customer.

"I can’t thank Chris and Eleanor enough for helping me out in this way and I know Ian will be forever grateful as he thought he had made a costly mistake which resulted in no cake for his wife."

The cake arrived in Fife at around 5.30pm on Wednesday and Ian was pictured beaming alongside his wife, Lorraine, as the couple proudly held the cake.
