Leeds indie band English Teacher curate your Friday night playlist

‘We’ve been waiting for this moment for so, so long’ says Douglas Frost – drummer of Leeds quartet English Teacher – about the release of their debut album This Could Be Texas, out today. ‘We’re nervous as hell," he continues, ‘I’m terrified of peoples’ opinions.’ Though it seems they needn't be worried – so far, every review has been glowing.

The genre-bending, alt-rock-adjacent band began making music four years ago, when vocalist and frontwoman Lily Fontaine rallied them together whilst studying at university – ‘I needed people to play music with me’ says Fontaine. Since then, their surreal visuals paired with dry humour and an indulgent, melancholy sound have had us hooked, particularly with singles ‘R&B’ and ‘The World’s Biggest Paving Slab’.

‘Throughout everything we’ve released we’ve been figuring out ourselves and our sound. With every release we get a bit closer. If we can ever do that, get close to understanding ourselves,’ explains Fontaine. As well as discovering themselves as a band, the album also brings with it a tour, plus new, exciting iterations of their live shows. ‘We’re looking forward to seeing how our live show changes and visiting countries we’ve always wanted to visit.’ Fontaine jumps in: ‘And going to loads of festivals that we’ve always wanted to go to!’

So, what’s the goal for English Teacher? Headlining the Pyramid Stage? Number one albums? ‘I mean, both of those would be lovely!’ laughs Frost. As they celebrate their album release, listen to English Teacher’s Friday night playlist here.
