Leeds Festival poo girl: The 2009 horror story which became festival legend

Leeds Festival goers will likely have heard the rumours about 'poo girl', the girl who got stuck in a long-drop toilet. The unfortunately true story is re-told at festivals, especially in the queue for long-drop toilets.

Back in 2009 an 18-year-old girl had to be rescued by firefighters after getting stuck in the long drop toilet. She managed to get the entire top half of her body wedged down into the toilet after reaching in to retrieve her dropped handbag.

Thankfully the teenager didn’t actually fully fall down into the loo – as rumours suggest. But she did need to be decontaminated before returning to the event.

Explaining how she got stuck in the bog in the first place, the 18-year-old told the Sunderland Echo in 2009: “As I got up to leave I swung my body round to open the door and my handbag slipped off my arm and disappeared down the toilet. It had my phone, ticket and all my money in so if I left it I would have been stranded.”

Apparently, the teenager had had some money stolen from her tent at the festival the previous year, so was being extra watchful of keeping her bag with her at all times. She added: "I put one hand down but I couldn't reach so I put the other one down too to try and grab it. I had both my hands down the toilet. I was straining so far down that I got wedged.”

Eventually, the girl, who was working as an apprentice for Specsavers at the time, had to call her mates to alert a local fire crew to come to her aid. The firefighters thought it was a joke for quite a while, but eventually realised the seriousness of her predicament once they’d taken the top of the loo off so they could get to her.

Once the teenager had been freed from her struggles the embarrassment didn’t end there, as she had to be decontaminated in the showers by being hosed down. After receiving some new clothes from the welfare tent she was able to go back to her tent and like a true festival legend, returned to the festivities for the rest of the weekend.
