Leeds face nervous wait as FA vow to take 'action' after Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is confronted

The FA have vowed to take 'appropriate action' after a Leeds United fan angrily confronted Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe on the touchline at Elland Road.

The supporter has been charged with assault and entering the field of play by police following the incident during Newcastle's 2-2 draw against Leeds on Saturday. The irate spectator grabbed Howe's arm before insulting the Magpies head coach and shoving him in the technical area in the 92nd minute.

Newcastle first-team coach Simon Weatherstone and head of performance Dan Hodges were quickest to react before the fan was led away by security. Having subsequently been charged, the individual was bailed to appear before magistrates on July 21.

Leeds promptly issued a lifetime ban to the spectator after the game, but the club now face a nervous wait to find out what action the FA take after the man was, somehow, able to leap over the advertising hoardings.

"We strongly condemn the incident involving a spectator during the Premier League fixture between Leeds United and Newcastle United," a statement from the FA read. "The behaviour of this individual is unacceptable, and we will work together with the police, the relevant authorities and the clubs to ensure the appropriate action is taken."

A smiling Howe was only half-joking after the game when he said he was 'glad someone was there' because he 'wouldn't have fancied my chances'.

"I don't know if I had time to be fearful because it was over in a flash," he added. "It certainly makes you think, 'What if?'

"Moments like this should hopefully make people think and analyse, and improve safety for staff and players. No one should have to face that playing a sport they love and trying to entertain the country. No one should have to feel their own personal safety is violated. It's certainly something for us to reflect on."
